This region is a priority (a) because there are few good data and (b) because it includes countries that are well-resourced to support activities.

Saudi Arabia offers opportunities for this reason. Door-to-door surveys are not possible in Saudi Arabia; an alternative is by mobile telephone if the sources of bias can be eliminated.

Pakistan offers an opportunity because of local interest and resources. An epidemiological study is near completion there.

A burden-of-headache study is needed in at least one country of Arabian North Africa. Opportunity exists in Morocco.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) are well-resourced, with good health care. In Abu Dhabi, the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD) encourages adoption of world-class best practices and performance targets by all health-care service-providers in the Emirate. Planned improvements to the health-care system are expanding capacity, with new health-care institutions as well as the development of existing facilities. This creates an ideal context for reviewing, expanding and improving headache services. Primary care is well supported in Abu Dhabi. Neurological services are within hospital-based secondary care. Since 2006, all residents are covered by a comprehensive health insurance programme.
