Lifting The Burden - Issue 6 (March 2009)

Welcome to LTB News, a regular newsletter to keep you up to date with what's happening - and what is planned to happen - in Lifting The Burden: the Global Campaign to Reduce the Burden of Headache Worldwide.

Welcome to the latest issue of LTB News. This month, Lifting The Burden celebrates its fifth birthday since its official launch, so we thought we'd focus on the various achievements the campaign has realised since 2004.

Lifting The Burden was started by the World Health Organization in collaboration with the World Headache Alliance, the International Headache Society and the European Headache Federation to remedy the deficiencies and inequalities that exist in the treatment of headache disorders worldwide. With the vision of a future in which headache disorders are recognised everywhere as real and disabling, and deserving of medical care that is available to all who require it, the campaign has three key objectives:

1. to know the size of the headache burden in all regions of the world
2. to persuade Governments, health policy makers, healthcare providers, those directly affected by headache and the general population that headache should have a higher treatment priority
3. to work with people and agencies at a local level to plan and implement healthcare services for headache that meet local needs.

Over the past five years, the campaign's main focus has been on the first of these: to determine the burden of headache around the globe by collating existing data and planning and supporting new population-based studies in those areas where little to no information exists. While work actively continues in this area, the campaign is also pressing ahead with its other objectives.
